Hello my busy Millennial people! This time I‘m taking you to the Northest point in Europe, where trees does not grow, where raindeers greet you in the morning next to your doors and where in the summer there is no night and in the winter there is no day. As always, I‘ll start with my summary lists for you guys, check it out.
WE FELL IN LOVE WITH:
- Lakes – so many of them in the middle of the mountains. On a sunny day you can even swim there (having in mind that most of the days are not that hot – just around 15 C).
- “Basecamp Northcape“ camping (previous Kirkeporten camping) boat tours to North cape – so much fun and great guides to tell all the secrets of the North (this is not sponsored, just a lovely experience that I had).
- Reindeers – they are everywhere! Even on the streets running along with the cars, so watch out.
- Food – if you want to try king crabs, reindeer meet or salmon in its’ best, this is the place for you.
- Midnight sun – it is unforgettable!
BEST PLACES TO VISIT:
- North Cape – this is the main tourist attraction and I would advice to come see it at midnight so you could see the full beauty of it.
- Hurtigruten – a big cruise line which operates as a local public transport, and you can go from one place to another even if they are not so far away. But on the way you will be amused with the beauty of the nature, as the cruise goes along the mountains and it is just so spectacular!
- Mountains – at least one day spent hiking would really raise up your spirits with all the beauty around. It is also easily achievable for anybody.
- Kirkeporten – a beautiful rock with a “window”. I think if you translate “Kirkeporten” to english it would mean “gates to the church”. If you go further hiking you will find a post box on the top of the mountain close to Kirkeporten (although I’m not sure if the posted letters are ever being delivered!).
We decided to make a road trip in Scandinavia. So we flew from England to Rovaniemi and then continued our journey with a car. Scandinavia is completely beautiful and has amazing nature. As you drive you pass mountains, lakes, cute little villages and you meet reindeers on the way as well.
We arrived to Skarsvaag (a small fisherman village in Norway situated close to North Cape) right at midnight. And I swear, this was one of the most beautiful things that I‘ve seen in nature – mountains covered by snow, sun beautifully shining in the horizon (at midnight!), the sky soaked in gorgeous pink and purple colors and a group of reindeers which just arrived to this small island… It was breathtaking… We stopped the car and I just jumped out of it without even wearing my shoes – I was that excited to see so many reindeers in one spot!
When days passed we went many times to hike through the mountains. The nature there was so different from what I was used to see – no trees, just rocky mountains, it looked sometimes as if I was somewhere on the Moon!
We went quite a few times to the North Cape (Nordkapp) and everytime I was there I could not stop admiring, as we usually chose to go at midnights when the sun in the horizon made the sky look divine. Once you are at North Cape, there are quite a few attractions to visit. There is a spacious entertainment hall with a few restaurants, where you can relax while watching the midnight sun and the monument through the window. Also, I fell in love with the All Religions chapel. This small chapel is the place where you can sit with your thoughts, no matter what religion you are and hear some meditation music. Just amazing… Finally, they have a small 3D movie theater about the North Cape. Really worth watching!
We left Norway with a good feeling in the heart and such a beautiful memories. I think one day we might come back.
