HIDDEN SECRETS OF COVENTRY, UK

HIDDEN SECRETS OF COVENTRY, UK

Have you ever been in a situation where you live close to something beautiful, but you just do not notice it? I have. And I just recently figured it out. It was not the first time that we went to Coventry, but this time we had more time for ourselves and therefore we decided to wander around a little bit. I was completely shocked with what we found. But first let me put it all in short lists.

WE FELL IN LOVE WITH:

  • The amazing and peaceful vibes in the Coventry Cathedral ruins, its’ architecture and ambiance. Just sitting there felt like a great meditation.
  • St. Mary’s Guildhall café. A perfect place for an afternoon tea (this is not an advertisement, we just really enjoyed having some tea there).
  • Swanswell park with hundreds of birds and its’ 12th century vibes.
  • Millennium Place (right in front of the Transport Museum), it’s like a small square with some surprising monuments.

BEST PLACES TO VISIT:

  • Ruins of St. Michael’s Cathedral. This beautiful ruins are the consequence of violence. The Cathedral burnt with the city during the 2nd World War.
  • St. Mary’s Guildhall. It’s one of the finest medieval guildhalls in the UK.
  • Lychgate Cottages. It’s best preserved historical building in Coventry.
  • Coventry Canal Basin. It’s an ideal starting point of the afternoon canal side stroll or a bike ride.

We have come across this beautiful cathedral…actually the ruins of it. It stood proudly in the middle of the city just waiting to be found. I cannot describe the feeling of being inside of it and at the same time outside as it had no roof, but the architecture was just so gorgeous! We sat there admiring it for quite a while until it got a little chilly.

We ran out of it to search for a warm place and maybe some delicious coffee or afternoon tea, and right around the corner there was St. Mary’s Guildhall with a small café. At first we had a little hard time to find it as we stood in the yard of St. Mary’s Guildhall looking around to quite a few doors with nothing signifying which ones leads to a café. But once we got there it was a delight. Although the food and drinks were quite simple, but the atmosphere was definitely worth it. It looked just like a basement of a castle or something. Definitely unique experience.

Once we got warm and ready to continue our journey, we went to check this very traditional Lychgate Cottages. I just love this beautiful yet simple exterior of these buildings and it stood next to the church where lot of squirrels were running around.

So we got to check the Lychgate houses and interact with a few squirrels and that already made our day brilliant! But we still had some time, so we continued to check another part of the city, the Coventry Canal Basin.

That part was quite peaceful with narrowboats parked and people living in them. It was just like a small community of boaters who were doing barbeques and playing with their dogs at the time when we arrived. We walked along the canal admiring the atmosphere and we felt as if the day has really fulfilled our wish to discover something new.

I hope you enjoyed our visual trip to Coventry, and if you are ever there drop me a line, maybe I could show you around.
